ARKANGEL OF REFUGE - Victor Kalishnikov Viktor Kalishnikov was an articulate painter and documenter of the chaos in Russian life which existed during and after Perestroika. He was also President of the Free Artists Association of Leningrad. A large part of his heart was overwhelmed with the sadness of the Russian situation. His angst is reflected in his expressionist style paintings of military objects. Torn by the limits of Russian life, he claimed refugee status during a 1989 visit to Montreal. Of quiet demeanour, the Arkangel of Refuge reflects a reserved public self which camouflages his great disappointments. His gaze leaves no doubt that parts of him are sealed away for only the most private introspection. He is sculpted as he was to become - a refugee and landed immigrant, arms folded, feet squarely planted on the ground, ready for whatever was to come his way next.
