HOPE ON THE MARCH - Mikail 'Misha' Breitman

Mikail Breitman is a man for whom the word 'impossible' is little more than a call to action. As General Manager of the Mayakovska Theatre in Moscow in the 1980's, he shared a rare optimism and great reverence for its elegance and history.

The true spirit of Misha's determination and generosity emerged during his 1991 visit to Montreal. Responding to a critical food shortage following the collapse of the USSR, he joined the relief efforts mounted here in Canada. Across the snow-blown Mirabel airport he marched, propelling a cart stacked high with the food parcels donated by Canadian ballet companies en route to the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg.

Misha's body studies originated from that singular, unforgettable sight -- mid-stride, head thrust forward on his long, lean body, in complete command of the unwieldy stack. His Arkangel moves in a posture chosen to articulate his singular sense of purpose and intensity.

"A rider dressed in a green pleated coat
rushed by on a yellow horse."

-- Wassily Kandinsky
